Part 1 · The universal rules
Truth or Dare is one of those games that need almost no preparation. A few friends, a place to sit and a bit of imagination are enough. The rules are simple, but how good the game gets depends a lot on how the group picks its questions, its dares and its limits.
The goal isn’t to trap anyone. A good game can go from fits of laughter to intimate questions and very bold dares, as long as the level is agreed on and everyone can pass without explaining why. Here is a clear flow you can adapt to your night.
How does Truth or Dare work?
On their turn, each player chooses between two options:
- Truth: answer a question honestly.
- Dare: complete a challenge suggested by the group or drawn at random.
Once the answer is given or the dare is done, it’s the next player’s turn. The game doesn’t need a winner or a set length. You can stop whenever you like, or add a points system for a friendly competition.
The game works with just two players, but it usually gets livelier from four people. In a big group, keep turns short so nobody waits too long.
Where does Truth or Dare come from?
The game is far from new. As early as the late 17th century, the English were already playing “Questions and Commands”: a leader asked nosy questions and handed out orders to each player. In France, it is also linked to “le roi qui ne ment” (the king who doesn’t lie), a medieval court game where a “king” asked questions, often about love, and everyone had to answer truthfully.
And then? Not much! For more than three centuries, the recipe barely changed: a question or a dare, the same ideas going round in circles, and that one player who picks “Truth” every single turn without ever taking a risk.
That’s exactly what WillYouDare came to shake up: difficulty levels, points that reward those who dare, and roles, events and secret missions that turn the game around. The principle stays the same, but the old parlour game finally becomes a real game. Discover the three WillYouDare variants below.
How do you set up the game?
Agree on a shared vibe
Before you start, choose the level of the night together: light, wild, intimate, hot or Extreme 18+. Sensual or sexual cards are only for a group made up entirely of consenting adults. If anyone is under 18, or if the group isn’t sure about the vibe, stick to suitable categories. You can raise the difficulty later, after a clear agreement.
Simply pick the first player
Choose at random, start with whoever suggested the game, or pick the person with the next birthday. Then go clockwise so the order stays obvious.
Step-by-step rules
- Gather the players. Sit so that everyone can see and hear the group.
- State the limits. Remind everyone of the right to pass, to change card or to leave the game.
- Pick a first player. They choose “Truth” or “Dare”.
- Give an instruction. It must be clear, doable and suited to the agreed vibe.
- Let the player decide. Don’t negotiate their consent and don’t make the dare harder along the way.
- Close the turn. Once the answer or the dare is done, move on to the next person.
- Stop at the right time. Better to end on a good memory than to keep going when the group gets bored.
How do you play Truth or Dare as a couple?
With two players the rules stay the same, but every card is about you directly: just take turns.
- Choose truths about the two of you: memories, desires, preferences.
- Go for dares made for two: a compliment, an impression, a timed challenge, a message you write together.
- Build up the intensity gradually and keep the right to pass at all times.
In WillYouDare, a game starts from 2 players: the app only draws cards that can be played with the number of people present. As a couple, the “Things are heating up!” and “It’s gonna get loud!” packs raise the temperature, and Competition mode turns the one-on-one into a points duel. To spice things up, also draw from our flirty truths.
How do you find good truths and dares, from light to Extreme?
A good Truth can stay light or become very intimate without demanding a trauma or a sensitive secret. A good Dare is clear, doable and suited to the chosen vibe. Raise the difficulty in steps: a funny dare, a bold card, then hot or Extreme 18+ content only if the whole group has agreed.
You could start with “Who here could you most easily end the night with?”, follow with “Do a thirty-second sensual dance for the person the group picks”, then keep the most sexual cards for a game between consenting adults. Our selection of 55 questions and dares goes from light to Extreme 18+, with a visible progression.
Part 2 · In WillYouDare
When Truth or Dare becomes a real game
WillYouDare keeps the Truth or Dare choice and adds its own mechanics: a Question category, three modes, scores, roles, group dares and events that can turn several rounds upside down.
The three WillYouDare variants
Simple and instant
Classic
Each turn, the player chooses Dare, Truth or Question. This third category, unique to WillYouDare, asks them to guess a preference about another player.
- No leaderboard to watch
- Ideal to kick off the night
- Roles and group cards depending on the pack
Choice + difficulty + points
Competition
Every choice has a value. Successes, failures and events move the leaderboard all the way to the final reward.
- Four difficulty levels
- Score calculated every turn
- Final forfeit for last place (10 forfeit ideas)
Competition + bluffing
Secret Missions
Each player gets a hidden objective to complete during the game without being spotted by the others.
- One mission per player
- Observation and false leads
- Reveal and score at the end
How does Classic mode work?
Add the names, choose a pack, then pass the phone to the player shown. They pick a Dare, a Truth or a Question and follow the card on screen. The Question category isn’t part of the traditional game. It’s a WillYouDare mechanic that asks you to guess a preference or an answer about another player, whereas a Truth is about yourself.
On top of these three choices, WillYouDare can bring in a role, an event or a group dare. When a role is assigned, keep it until the app announces its end. Some dares and effects are checked several rounds later. The screen guides every step. There’s nothing to count in this mode.
How does scoring work in Competition and Secret Missions?
Competition and Secret Missions use the same point scale, since this variant keeps Competition’s turns, difficulties and leaderboard before adding hidden objectives. Each turn, the player first chooses the card type, then its difficulty. The more commitment a card demands, the more points it is worth. A Dare earns more than a Truth of the same difficulty. A Question sits in between.
| Card | Easy | Medium | Hard | Extreme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Truth | 1 | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| Question | 1 | 3 | 4 | 7 |
| Dare | 2 | 4 | 6 | 10 |
The player wins all the points shown.
The player loses half of the card’s value.
They win half. The person who blocked them loses the same amount.
How do Secret Missions work?
This variant keeps all the Competition rules, then hands each player a confidential objective at the start. The challenge is as much about completing your mission as about hiding it.
-
1
Receive
Read your mission alone and memorize it.
-
2
Bluff
Complete it naturally during the rounds.
-
3
Observe
Spot the others’ suspicious behaviour.
-
4
Reveal
At the end, accuse, reveal and confirm the successes.
Make the same person laugh three times.
Choose a Dare on every even turn.
Get someone else to adopt a nickname.
Choose “Random pick” four times without raising suspicion.
The result of the secret mission is added to the points won during the rounds. At the end, the app takes into account whether it succeeded, whether it was discovered and how hard it was. The riskier or harder to hide an objective is, the bigger its effect on the leaderboard can be.
Roles, group dares and events
Roles
A personal rule, funny or provocative, stays active until the app announces its end. It can change how you speak, choose or interact for several rounds.
Group dares
They involve several players in a shared challenge. Depending on the pack, they can be absurd, competitive, sensual or downright daring.
Events
They temporarily change the rules: doubled cards, a blocked category or points stolen between two players.
Which variant should you choose tonight?
The right to pass stays rule number one
A high difficulty, a sexual card or the Extreme 18+ level never takes away the right to refuse. If a card goes beyond a player’s limits, change it without debate. No score is worth forced contact, humiliation, a risk or sharing an image without consent.
To start the night, fifteen to thirty minutes is enough. A Competition or Secret Missions game is better over several rounds, so the leaderboard and the bluffing have time to evolve. Stop when the energy drops: the best last round is the one that makes you want to play again.
